Candidate Support Network

The OTC Candidate Support network is there to assist mountain bike leaders and instructors to get the very best from their riding. Open to all those who have attended OTC courses, it forms two main areas:
  1. Connection with others who want leaders or instructors for their groups
  2. Support through company offers, including equipment and holidays

Contact Leaders and Instructors

Connect up with other Leaders and Instructors.

This service is offered to all those who tick 'yes' to the name release section of the course attendance form. If someone contacts OTC wanting a leader or a skill instructor for a group, or they would like to assist or oversee other leaders or instructors who have been through the scheme, you can be contacted directly by them. If you would like to connect up with others, contact enquiries@otc.org.uk.

Do you need Leaders?

If you need Leaders or Skill Instructors for your mountain bike sessions, contact enquiries@otc.org.uk. This service provides you with a listing of all the Leaders and Instructors in your area who have said they would like to be contacted.

Please note that due to OTC's commitment to the Data Protection Act, only candidates names, addresses and status (i.e. trained or Level 2 Leader) are released, and then only if they have ticked the appropriate box on the attendance sheet.

Add your name to the list.

If you have attended an OTC course, and would like your name to be added or removed from this list, please contact enquiries@otc.org.uk.

Company Offers

Alp Active, Karrimor and Orange believe that leaders who have attended courses as part of the National Mountain Bike Leader Award Scheme, are helping develop a solid foundation for the recreational side of the sport. Because of this, they are prepared to support you in your role as leaders promoting responsible mountain biking.

Through significant work with all three companies by OTC, candidates of the National Mountain Bike Award Scheme can purchase equipment at special prices or obtain special deals on mountain biking holidays. These have been arranged for you because you are actively involved in the sport: you are influential in introducing others to safe and aware riding techniques, and in developing the sport at grassroots level.

Who is it available to?

This arrangement has only been made possible thanks to YOU - continuing to provide quality mountain bike leading. Therefore Alp Active, Orange and Karrimor want to help anyone who has attended a National Mountain Bike Leader Award Scheme or Skill Instructor course. Once you have attended a course, your name is added to the list.

What sort of holidays do Alp Active do?

OTC ran a Level 2 training course for all Alp Active staff during the summer of 2001 at Alp Active's base in Les Gets, French Alps. They were so pleased with the course, that they now offer candidates of OTC leader and skill instructor courses discounts of 10% on any brochure package. What's more, if you organise a group going, you could end up going for free!

Alp Active run a variety of mountain biking holidays tailored to different needs, so you are sure to find one that suits you. From Downhill training camps with Nigel Page through Freeride Frenzies to XC Ecstacy. And there's guiding of course, with OTC trained Alp Active staff as well as a host of other Alpine activities for the non-riders.

What's more, you don't even need to stay a week. If you only have a weekend available, make the most of the excellent riding, cable car and ski lift service and Alp Active's excellent accommodation. From what we saw there, you can be sure you'll be back.

For more details go to the Alp Active website, and don't forget to tell them you've been on an OTC course.

What do Karrimor and Orange produce?

Karrimor started making cycle bags, like panniers and saddle bags in 1946, developed to make rucksacks for climbing, hillwalking and mountaineering from 1957, and added clothing to the range in 1988. As a company, Karrimor have developed to be the largest and most influential manufacturers of such equipment in the UK. Within three ranges, the Bike, the Trek and the Alpiniste, Karrimor manufacture equipment to meet the needs of all those in the outdoor world from travellers to mountaineers, and especially mountain bikers.

Each range includes clothing and carrying equipment specific to the activity. The bike range sports cycle shorts, bib tights, riding jerseys and shell type waterproofs, including the acclaimed Eston cycle cape, the first to use stretchy goretex material. Panniers, saddle bags and handlebar bags also form part of the bike range.

General outdoor clothing and carrying bags like technical holdalls and general rucksacks using modern materials are contained within the Trek range.

Mountain clothing and equipment is provided by the Alpiniste range. Including rucksacks and a full range of technical clothing based on the layering principle. Clothing within Karrimor is produced using the well known and highly recommended polartec and goretex materials.

Orange manufacture some of the most recognised mountain bikes in the U.K. The Clockwork is a mountain bike design classic, the first bike produced by Orange in 1988. A full range, from rigid steel chassied machines through race bred hard tails and 7" travel fully suspended downhill machines is available.

The clothing range from Orange is designed around the technical and leisure wear needs of mountain bikers. Technical wear includes cycle shorts, tights, and tops as well as pertex waterproofs. The extensive leisure wear collection provides everything from trendy t-shirts and shorts to stylish fleece sweaters and jackets.

Orange without a doubt are the mountain bike company for mountain bikers, and everything in the range is proven useful to riders whether racing at top level, just out being there and enjoying it, or instructing other riders.

How much will it be?

Both Orange and Karrimor have arranged special prices for those who have attended courses as part of the National Mountain Bike Leader Award Scheme, or National Mountain Bike Skill Instructor Awards.

Karrimor equipment is provided at 'Expedition Price'. To give an example, the top of the range Eston waterproof, retailing at £199.99 is available to you at £136.

Orange clothing is available at special 'OTC price' which offers similar reductions. A further special arrangement is available to you to purchase Orange bikes.

A range of ex-demo bikes are available through OTC. All sorts of bikes are used by Orange to provide demonstrations of their products. This means that the bikes are all of the same high quality as those leaving the factory for the shops, but they have been used for short periods at bike shows, demo days or shop demos. Usually, the bikes are only one or two months old, and are always in good working condition, though they may have some minor marks to the finish, simply due to being used.

Ex-demo bikes may be identical to those in the standard Orange range, or they may have variations in componentry, and be one-offs. There are even prototype units which have been tested (and obviously passed) in accordance with the high specifications that Orange use.

Ex-demo bikes, available at special ex-demo prices, offer significant savings over the equivalent new models in the shops. Not all bikes in the Orange range may be available all the time. To find out more details about the availability of ex-demo bikes, call OTC on 0114 231 0240.
